Part B: Effective professional development Effective professional development for school leaders should follow the guidelines below. Please check those that apply to your activity.
	The activity incorporates adult learning theory, Some examples of which may be found here.
	Activities pertaining to school improvement and/or leadership are grounded in the research on school improvement and/or leadership. Learning opportunities that pertain to topics about management or other functions that may not be addressed by scientifically-based research should be grounded in the professional literature base of that field.
	The professional development includes the presentation of theory and opportunities for leaders to reflect, collaborate, and apply new knowledge and skills to their leadership practice (demonstrations should be provided if appropriate).
	The activity includes follow-up and ongoing support from the presenter or other representative who provides structured follow-up or will be available following the professional development for support via e-mail, telephone or other method.
	Professional development can be successful or not simply based on the skill of the presenter. Presenters of the highest quality are essential. Do you have resources to vouch for the quality of the presenter’s skills, e.g., references, resources, materials, previous evaluations?

Standards for all school leaders

Professional development must be specifically focused on at least one of the Iowa standards. A complete list of Iowa standards and criteria for school leaders is available here,

Standard 1—Shared Vision: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community.

Standard 2—Culture of Learning: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional development.

Standard 3—Management: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations and resources for a safe, efficient and effective learning environment.

Standard 4—Family and Community: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs and mobilizing community resources.

Standard 5—Ethics: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by acting with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.

Standard 6—Societal Context: An educational leader promotes the success of all students by understanding the profile of the community and responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal and cultural context.
